汉语常用虚词的译法

虚词用来表示词与词、句与句之间的语法关系和意义十：的联系，使用频率很高。英语用来表示这种关系的是介词和连词。翻译时，汉语中的虚词——般译成英语中的介词和连词。本节讨论汉语几个常用虚词及由虚词构成的词组的译法。

(一)在…时候，在…前、在…之后、随着、(直到)…为止(才)、自从

翻译时对应的英语词语有：when、before、after、as、until(till)、since等。

1. 在我们最需要他的时候，却哪儿也找不到他。

When we needed him most，we could not find him anywhere.

(“在…时候”译成英语的时间状语从句，when引导该从句。)

2. 金属随着温度升高而膨胀。

The metal expands口3 the temperature increases.

(“随着”译成as，引导时间状语从句。“随着”也可用介词with翻译，此句变为The metal expands with the increase in temperature. )

3. 在作用力消除后，拉长了的橡皮带恢复到它原来的长度。

After the removal“the acting force，the stretched rubber band returns to its original length.

(“在…之后”译成after，与其他相关的词语形成介词短语after the removal of the acting force，在句中作状语修饰动词returns。)

4. 自从中国人发明指南针以来，已经过了近两千年了。

Nearly two thousand years have passed since the Chinese invented the compass.

(“自…以来”译作连词since引导时间状语从句。“自…以来”也可译成介词，如：电自发现以来，得到了广泛的应用，译成：Electricity has found wide applications since its discovery此处since是介词。)

5. 他直到大学毕业才不跟双亲住在一起。

He lived with his parents until he graduated from college.

6. 街上的噪音一直到午夜才停止。

The noise of the street did not stop until midnight.

(“直到…才”译成until或till。Until可与表示“连续性”的动词连用，如例5，这里until是连词;或用在否定句中，与表示瞬间性动作的动词连用，说明动作或状况延续到某一时刻，如例6，这里until是介词。)
