英语的“timid”借自法语，而法语的“timide”又借自拉丁语的“timidus”，意为“fearful”(害怕)。法语的“timide”是“害羞，扭捏”，更强调“不擅交际，认生”(uneasy incompany)，常译为英语的“shy”。

Exemple:

1.Quand j’étais jeune, j’étais très timide. Je rougissais à tout bout de champ.

I was very shy when I was young. I would blush at the drop of a hat.

我小时候特别害羞，动不动就脸红。

2.La petite fille était tellement timide qu'elle se cachait derrière les jambes de sa mère dès qu'on lui parlait.

The girl was so shy that she would hide behind her mother's legs when someone talked to her.

小女孩特别害羞，别人一和她说话，她就躲在妈妈的腿后面。

法国的妈妈就常对小孩子说：

Ne fais pas ton timide!

You're being shy again! Quit playing shy!

别扭扭捏捏的，大方点嘛!

情境：妈妈和儿子在路上见到一个朋友。妈妈要儿子吻这个阿姨(法式打招呼)，但儿子不肯。

其实，不光是小孩子会怕见生人啦。成年人也会有“社交恐惧”。

Je suis trop timide pour parler devant les gens ou avec des groupes de personnes que je ne connais pas.

I'm too shy to talk in front of people or with groups of people I don't know.

我怕在众人面前讲话，也怕和生人打交道。

Si l'on est à une soirée et qu'on est timide, on peut toujours boire pour se détendre.

If you are at a party and you are shy, you can always drink to relax.

如果你在晚会上感到不自在，那就喝点酒以帮助放松。

法语的“timide”还可以表示“犹疑不决，不够强硬”(faible)，常译为英语的“hesitant”等。
