英语的“valid”借自法语，而法语的“valide”又来自拉丁文的“validus”，原意是“强壮，能干”(strong, effective)。这个词的同源词有英语的“value”(价值)，法语的“valoir”(值得)现代法语的“valide”主要还是“身体健全，能胜任工作”的意思，常译为英语的“able-bodied”等。

Exemple:

1.Tous les hommes valides, quel que fût leur âge, ont été mobilisés.

All the able-bodied men, whatever their age, were called up.

所有健康男子，不论年龄，全体总动员。

2.Le docteur m’a permis de reprendre le travail, mais je ne me sens pas encore très valide.

The doctor has given me permission to start work again but I don’t feel very strong /fit yet.

医生允许我上班了，但我觉得很身体还很弱。

3.Elle n’a plus qu’un bras valide et il faut voir tout ce qu’elle peut encore faire.

She’s only got one good arm but you should see what she still manages to do.

她只有一只健康的手，可是真不敢相信她还这么能干。

“身体强壮”这个意思从其反义词看就更清楚了，法语的“invalide” 主要意为“残废(残疾人)”(handicapé, impotent)，要译为英语的“handicapped，disabled(person)”等。

Exemple:

1.Il touche une indemnité pour sa jambe invalide.

He gets an indemnity because of his crippled leg.

他因为腿的残疾而领抚恤金。

2.Cette place est réservée aux invalides.

This seat is reserved for war pensioners.

这个座位是特地为残疾军人保留的。

学法语的童鞋都知道巴黎的“Les Invalides” (荣军院) 吧?

注意：法语“invalide”主要指运动机能(肢体)“残疾”，常译为英语的“disabled”，而英语的“invalid”虽然也可形容人的健康不佳，无法正常生活，但未必是残疾, 常译为法语的"malade".(Notez que l’adjectif français “invalide” fait souvent plutôt référence à un handicap moteur et il sera alors traduit par “disabled”;par contre, l’adjectif anglais “invalid” met plus l’accent sur un mauvais état de santé, il sera donc souvent traduit en français par “malade”. )
