英语的“block”借自法语，而法语的“bloc”来自个日耳曼语词原来，古法语的“bloc”(原木，木块)的来源是古荷兰语的“bloc”或者高地德语的“bloh”，意思是“树干” (trunk of a tree)。而追踪溯源，其“老祖宗”是原始印欧语(PIE)词根“ *bhelg-”，意为“厚木板，房梁”(a thick plank, beam)。法语的“bloc”从“大块木头”转而指任何“大块”的物体，在这个意义上可以和英语的“block”对译。

Exemple:

De gros blocs de pierre barraient l’entrée du tunnel.

Large blocks of stone barred the entrance to the tunnel.

大块的岩石挡住了隧道的入口。

再进一步引伸，法语的“bloc”也可指任何“大块”的事物,组织机构的整体：“集团”。

Exemple:

Ces éléments (entreprises) forment un bloc.

These elements form a unit (These companies make up a group).

这些元素构成了一个单位。(这些公司组成了一个集团。)

注意：英语里也有“bloc”一词，也表示“集团”，但一般只用于国际政治领域。

Exemple:

1.The communist bloc—— Le bloc communiste

共产党国家集团

2.The same problem can be found in the countries of the former Soviet bloc.

Le même problème se retrouve pour l'ex-bloc soviétique /le bloc de l'Est.

前苏联(东欧)集团国家也面临同样的问题。

法语的“bloc”还有其他诸多引伸用法，如："稿纸，手术室" 等。

Exemple:

1.J’ai sorti mon bloc de papier à lettres et j’ai attendu que l’inspiration me vienne.

I got out my writing pad and waited for inspiration.

我拿出稿纸，等灵感到来。

2.Le malade arrive au bloc pour subir une intervention chirurgicale.

The patient was rushed to the operating room for surgery.

病人被送到手术室进行手术。

3.Les policiers lui ont fait passer la nuit au bloc.

The police put him in the cells for the night.

警察把他关了一夜。

英语的“block”也保留了“大块”的事物这个意义，但和法语“bloc”有所不同。

Exemple:

1.He lives three blocks away.

Il habite trois rues plus loin.

他住的地方离这里有三个街区。

2.The whole block was destroyed by the fire.

Tout le pâté de maisons fut détruit par l’incendie.

整个街区都被烧毁了。

3.The club bought a block of tickets (booked a block of seats) for a musical.

Le club a acheté une série de tickets (a réservé une série de places) pour une comédie musicale.

俱乐部买了这个音乐剧的系列套票(联号的多张票)。

英语的“block”的另一意思是“阻挡，路障”，也可以是象征性的"障碍"。

Exemple:

1.In spite of the police road blocks, the prisoner managed to escape.

Malgré les barrages (routiers) de la police, le prisonnier est parvenu à s’échapper.

尽管警察设了路障，犯人还是设防逃脱了。

2.She’s got a mental block about figures.

Dès qu’on parle de chiffres, elle fait un blocage.

一涉及数字，她就大脑一片空白。

“Bloc /block”的动词形式“bloquer (法)”和“block(英)”，其主要意思都是“阻挡”，常可以互译。

Exemple:

1.Un bouchon de 4 km bloque la route.

A 4-mile traffic jam is blocking the road.

一个4公里长的堵车带阻塞住了道路。

2.Le manifestants bloquaient l’entrée.

The demonstrators were blocking the entrance.

示威者阻挡了入口。

3.He tried to reach his home but police officers blocked his path.

La police lui a bloqué /barré l'accès à la rue.

警察拦住了他的去路。

4.They blocked off the main road so that the President's motorcade could drive through securely.

On a barré la route principale pour assurer la sécurité du Président.

他们对主路施行交通管制以确保总统车队安全通过。

但法语的“bloquer”并不总是可以翻译为英语的“block”，特别是当“bloquer”的动作对象(宾语)不是“道路”时。

Exemple:

1.Nous avons été bloquée par un accident sur l’autoroute.

We were held up by an accident on the motorway.

我们被高速路上的交通事故耽搁了。

(“bloquer”的动作对象是“我们”)

2.A cause de cette grippe, j’ai été bloquée à la maison pendant une semaine.

I was stuck indoors for a week with that flu.

这个感冒让我在家卧病一周。

3.On dirait qu’ils font tout pour bloquer les négociations.

It’s as if they were doing everything possible to hold up the negotiation /bring the negotiation to a standstill.

看来他们是千方百计想让谈判搁浅。

在下面的例句中，“bloquer”的动作对象为“机器零件”，意为“固定，拧紧”。
